METHOD
STATEMENT OF CEMENT STORAGE AND SAFE HANDLING
1.
INTRODUCTION
A.
Purpose
The purpose of this document is to provide procedures
to assist the safe handling and storage of Cement. (Manual handling and
mechanical Handling)
B.
Scope
This document describes the requirement for the
following
I.
Responsibility in cement
storage and handling
II.
The requirements for specialist
personnel.
III.
Manually cement unloading from
trucks.
IV.
Cutting and feeding of cement
in batching plant hopper.
V.
The requirement for the safety
of materials in transit and in-store.
2.
RESPONSIBILITIES
a)
Site In-charge
Site In-charge
is overall responsible for ensuring to comply with companies EHS and Quality The standard at the site.
b) QC Engineer
QC Supervisor is
responsible to ensure that cement storage is safe and as per standard in cement
storeroom
c) Store In-charge
Store In-charge is
responsible to store material with safe handling and safe storage with the implementation of EHS and Quality Standard of company.
3.
PROCEDURE
FOR CEMENT STORAGE AND SAFE HANDLING
A.
CEMENT BAGS UNLOADING FROM
TRUCK
·
QUALITY PROCEDURE
I. 1. Cement shall be unloaded manually by means of labor.
II. 2. Date of manufacture shall be checked on bags and same shall
be written in the invoice.
III. 3. Cement bags shall be checked in the truck if any moisture and
lumps present in cement bags, bags shall
not be unloaded in cement store go down.
IV. 4. During showering or raining, cement bags shall not be unloaded
till the rain is not stoped.

SAFETY PROCEDURE
I.
Labors shall be in all mandatory PPE’s and with nose mask
and hand gloves while unloading cement bags.
II. The wooden platform shall be checked first weather planks are
fixed on battens to uplift by weight of labor to safe walking and unloading of
cement on planks.
III.
There shall be proper lighting arrangements in the storeroom
while unloading cement.
B.
CEMENT
STORAGE PROCEDURE

QUALITY
PROCEDURE
I. 1. Cement will be received in bags
II. 2. Cement shall be stored in a leak-proof storeroom.
III. 3. The storeroom should have the minimum window and close-fitting
doors.
IV. 4. Cement bags shall be stacked off the wooden planks in such a
way as to keep about 150mm to 200mm clear above the floor. The floor may
comprise of lean cement concrete.
V. 5. A polythene membrane shall be there to cover the wooden planks
on which cement will be stacked.
VI. 6. A Space of 400mm to 600mm shall be left around between the
exterior walls and the stacks.
VII.
In the stack, the cement bags shall be kept close together to
reduce the circulation of air such as much as possible.
VIII. 7. The height of stack shall not be more than 10 bags to prevent
the possibility of lumping up under pressure.
IX. 8. Each lot of cement shall be stacked separately with a minimum
400mm distance from last lot stacked.
X. 9.Cement bags shall be stacked in a manner to facilitate their
removal and use in the order in which they are received.
XI. 10. FIFO (First in First Out) procedure shall be followed in
removal of cement bags.
XII. 11. For extra safety during the monsoon, or when it is expected
to store for an unusually long period the stack shall be completely covered by
a waterproofing membrane such as polythene.

SAFETY PROCEDURE
I.
Proper lighting shall be provided in the cement storeroom.
II.
Min two Exhaust fans shall be fitted in the cement storeroom.
C.
CUTTING AND FEEDING OF
CEMENT IN BATCHING PLANT HOPPER

QUALITY PROCEDURE
I. 1. Cement shall be feed in the hopper by means of manual labor.
II. 2. FIFO (First in First Out) Procedure shall be followed in
feeding of cement hopper.
III. 3. Old cement bags shall be feed first in the hopper.
IV. 4. After completing the concrete work, the hopper platform shall be
cleaned and extra cement bags shall be stacked again.
V. 5. Cement bags shall be covered again by polythene after
completing the concrete work.
VI. 6. Doors of Cement storage shall be closed at the end of the work.
SAFETY PROCEDURE IN CEMENT STORAGE AND SAFE HANDLING OF CEMENT
I.
All labors shall be in mandatory PPE’s and with Nose mask
and hand gloves while cutting and feeding cement in the hopper.
II.
Temporary steps shall be provided up to hopper plate form to
feed hopper.
III.
Exhaust fans shall be in working condition while feeding
cement in the hopper.
